Red-Hot Scots Top Chargers in Region IV Quarterfinals

CRYSTAL LAKE — The Carl Sandburg College men’s basketball team had four players score in double figures but couldn’t withstand a red-hot shooting night by McHenry County in a 107-81 loss Thursday in the quarterfinals of the Region IV Division II District 4 tournament.

The Chargers (15-15) got off to a seven-point lead in the opening minutes, but the third-seeded Scots (16-15) made 11 of 16 3-pointers in the first half while building a 60-44 lead. McHenry County finished 17 of 26 from beyond the arc in the game and shot 58 percent (43 of 74) overall.

Freshman forward Matt Williams (Peoria, Ill./Notre Dame) had 19 points on 7-of-10 shooting to lead Sandburg. Williams also paced the Chargers with seven rebounds. Atem Agot (East Moline, Ill./United Township) had 13 points, six boards, and two steals for Sandburg.

Sophomore Griffin Ronnebeck (East Moline, Ill./United Township) was 4 of 9 from 3-point range to account for all 12 of his points in his final game as a Charger. Freshman Eric Price (Galesburg, Ill./Galesburg) had 10 points off the bench. Hunter Caves (Alburnett, Iowa/Alburnett) also had a solid night in a reserve role, scoring eight points and grabbing six rebounds for the Chargers.

Sandburg shot 30 of 65 (46 percent) overall from the field and hit 11 of 29 (38 percent) attempts from long distance.
